When the Jeep Wrangler JK was launched in 2007, the differences between it and the the predecessor, the TJ were very obvious. The new Wrangler JL looks at lot like the JK, but there are many differences. Quinn Thomas explains the mechanical features that separate the JL from the JK
The CORVA (California Off Road Vehicle Association) held its annual Truckhaven Challenge Poker Run on Saturday, January 11. We were attending the event for Nexen Tires and giving rides around the Truckhaven 4x4 Training Area Obstacle Course in the Nexen Tire Project YJ and Bill and Wendy Stephens Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon equipped with Nexen Roadian MTX 37" tires. Nexen also provided a set of Roadian MTX tires for the huge prize drawing. The event was really well organized and the participants had a great time!
With a motorsports career spanning over 60 years, Don has a wealth of experience and knowledge. The author of 19 books, mostly racing and Jeep related and hundreds of magazine articles, Don brings his experience to readers and viewers. After 50 years of racing cars, Don has turned to the off road world. His wife often kids him about "Mr. Speed Demon" having fun at 2 MPH rock crawling. (Don set the land speed record for pickup trucks in 2001 at 222 MPH in the Banks Sidewinder Diesel-powered Dodge Dakota). Today Don operates the Jeep 4x4 School in Big Bear Lake, CA. He also provides testing services for 4x4 related products and tire companies. Don is currently writing another Jeep book with co-author Quinn Thomas, owner of All J Products in Big Bear. The Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator Performance Modifications title is the third Jeep book the pair have authored.

We took our Nexen Tire Project YJ out to Cougar Buttes for the first time after installing a Jeep 5.9 V8 and automatic transmission. We ran Chicken Rock, Bull Frog and Cake Walk. Christmas storms in Big Bear left behind a lot of snow. can the stock 2020 All J Gladiator make up a normally easy rutted hill climb? It took some work but it did make it. Thanks to Bill Stephens for shooting the video while standing knee-deep in the snow!
Chicken Rock in Cougar Buttes is an awesome challenge for drivers, Jeeps and especially tires. Chicken Rock provides an excellent spot for testing tires for traction both up and down.

When ball joints begin to wear, the first signs of death wobble appear. If you catch this slight shaking of the steering wheel, you can stop death wobble before it really begins and causes more serious damage to your Jeep.If you use Dynatrac ball joints, they can be rebuilt. We put about 35,000 miles on a set of Dynatrac ball joints before we noticed the early stages of wobble. We spent two days with the crew from Driver's Talk on the trails around Big Bear Lake, CA. Hosts Rick Titus Titus and Jay Dalton were joined by Molly Saleen, a professional racer and daughter of Steve Saleen (of Mustang and Supercar fame). Fast and Fabulous Molly had never been off road. We answered her biggest question - "can you get a major adrenaline rush at 2 MPH". Watch the videos for here answer!
Brittney and Kevin Williams of LiteBright NAtion came to Big Bear in their quest to run all 42 Jeep Badge of Honor Trails. Three are in the Big Bear Area including Gold Mt., John Bull and Holcomb Creek. Jeep 4-1-1's own Don Alexander lead them on their adventure (and had a couple of his own along the way. Due to a lenghtk run on Gold Mt. with over 25 rigs, the John Bull trail became a night run. Great fun and they were awesome to work with.
Beadlock wheels are great for mud terrain tires and very low tire pressures. But they require maintenance to assure they do not fail. Proper torquing is critical. Beadlock bolts loosen u over time which can cause the bolts to break and the beadlock ring to be damaged. The Nexen Roadian MTX mud terrain tire is a fairly new entry in the M/T market. Don Alexander with help from Quinn Thomas conducted the initial comparison testing for Nexen 2 1/2 years ago and the Roadian MTX proved to be very capable. The tire was introduced to the public about 112 years ago and we have be using them ever since. The tires have also been used on five Wranglers at the Big Bear Jeep Experience. Look for Desi's input about his experience with the Nexen Roadian MTX tires as well as others who have used these tires extensively.
While tire pressure are extremely important for off road driving, traction and comfort, it's not the pressure that matters, but the spread of the tire contact patch that is key. Different tires on the same vehicle will require different tire pressures to optimize the tire footprint. And the same tire on different vehicles will also need different tire pressures. The load resting on the tire as well as the sidewall stiffness of the tire make the difference. Watch as Don Alexander explains.
